Stuff

This is a place for other things, mainly creative projects, that don’t quite fit with the normal musician stuff.

I studied Interactive Arts, at Manchester School of Art & Design; during that time I did loads of cool stuff, sound installations, video art, web art and other bits and pieces. If you’re curious take a look at joesart.org – my art blog site that I used regularly while I was studying Interactive Arts. This ‘Stuff’ page has a selection of bits and pieces from my various projects.

Soup Kitchen

Using the strangely fantastic networking tool that is Twitter, I discovered an opportunity to do some visual artwork at the Soup Kitchen, in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The visuals were for an event put on by Garry Thomas, under the banner Little Soul Events. I used the software that I created for my University degree show to present images in an ever-changing animated video loop. Each frame in the loop was a photograph that I had just taken, which was then wireless-ly transferred to the computer running the software.

It is a little hard to explain. But here is a video made from all of the images I captured. The music is provided by Daniel J Nixon – who also performed at the event.

Because one of the performers cancelled, I actually took to the stage to play a couple of songs (using Daniel’s guitar) – which was my first ever solo performance! (Cherry. Pop.)

Ups & Downs

This is a conceptual video sculpture piece that I created in 2008.

Inspired by the cyclical nature of emotions, nature and life the visual effects are created by layering the output from two basic line generators. The sound is produced by two Risset tone generators.

Although it maybe unpleasant at times, if you watch in full screen, and give it some patience you may find yourself immersed and reach a kind of meditative state. Especially if you try with headphones.

Fourtet – A Joy (remix)

A video that I made to enter a competition run by it.qoob.tv, for the remix version of A Joy by Four Tet. Featuring friends, faces and joy.
